GTA 6 May Struggle to Hit 60fps Even on PS5 Pro, Technical Analysis Suggests

Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) may not achieve a stable 60 frames per second (fps) even on the PlayStation 5 Pro, according to a technical analysis by Digital Foundry. Despite being the most powerful console in the current generation, performance constraints linked to the game’s scale and complexity could limit frame rates on high-end hardware.

Early insights suggest that Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title may instead target 30fps or potentially 40fps modes, rather than a consistent 60fps experience on consoles.

The main concern highlighted in the analysis is the game’s heavy reliance on CPU performance. GTA 6 features a large and highly detailed open world set in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional version of Florida, with Vice City serving as its central urban hub.

Based on the second trailer and available screenshots, the game appears to include dense city environments, large pedestrian populations, advanced vehicle systems, and a highly interactive world simulation. These elements significantly increase the computational load required from the console hardware.

Modern open-world games with complex simulation systems often struggle to maintain high frame rates in densely populated areas. Titles such as Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 have already demonstrated how crowded environments and advanced AI behavior can impact performance, even on powerful systems.

GTA 6 is expected to push these limits further due to its scale and realism. Players will be able to travel seamlessly across land, sea, and air, while vehicles and environmental interactions are likely to feature advanced physics and dynamic systems. These factors increase CPU workload and make sustained 60fps performance more difficult to achieve.

Another key challenge is the balance between visual fidelity and performance. Rockstar Games is known for highly detailed environments, advanced lighting systems, and realistic animations. Features such as ray tracing and complex environmental effects further increase the graphical demands placed on the hardware.

As a result, analysts suggest that even the upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro may prioritize visual quality over frame rate stability in GTA 6. This would likely lead to multiple performance modes, with a focus on cinematic presentation at 30fps and a possible performance mode targeting higher but less stable frame rates.

While Rockstar has not officially confirmed performance targets for GTA 6 on any platform, expectations remain high given the franchise’s history of pushing hardware to its limits. However, the scale of the new game world and its simulation systems suggest that achieving consistent 60fps gameplay on current-generation consoles could be challenging.

PC performance is expected to differ significantly once the game eventually releases on that platform, with high-end hardware likely offering more flexibility in frame rate and graphical settings.

For now, GTA 6 remains one of the most technically ambitious games in development, and its final performance profile will depend on how Rockstar optimizes the balance between realism, scale, and hardware limitations.
