Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Thursday emphasized that transport and connectivity are the backbone of economic progress, urging greater regional cooperation to achieve shared prosperity through modern infrastructure and sustainable mobility.
Speaking at the opening session of the two-day Regional Transport Ministers Conference in Islamabad, the minister highlighted that transport development is central to trade, investment, and employment generation across Asia and the Middle East.
Connectivity as a Driver of Growth
Welcoming delegates from several regional and international organizations, Aleem Khan said that smart, efficient, and environment-friendly transport systems are essential for inclusive economic growth.
“Transport and connectivity are pillars of economic development,” he said. “Smart transport solutions are essential for shared prosperity, and Pakistan is playing its part to promote regional integration.”
The minister underscored that enhanced cross-border infrastructure will enable countries to tap into new trade corridors and supply chains, bringing millions of people closer to new economic opportunities. “All participating countries share a common vision of cooperation and progress,” he added.
Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Transport
The high-level conference brings together transport ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, along with officials from Iran, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
Representatives from leading international organizations — including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), the International Road Transport Union (IRU), and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Office (UNSG) — are also attending.
Aleem Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to building an integrated, sustainable, and smart transport network. He noted that recent initiatives, including motorway expansions, digital logistics platforms, and clean energy mobility, reflect the government’s determination to modernize the transport sector and reduce its environmental footprint.
Expo Showcases Transport Innovation
Running parallel to the conference, an international transport and logistics expo is showcasing the latest advancements in green mobility, smart traffic systems, logistics technology, and road safety solutions.
The minister said that Pakistan’s investments in digital highways, regional corridors, and cleaner fuel options are designed to facilitate efficient trade flows and reduce carbon emissions. “We are committed to building a transport ecosystem that connects people, empowers businesses, and supports sustainable development,” he concluded.
