China’s Shandong Xinxu Group has shown strong interest in Pakistan’s ambitious Sea to Steel initiative at Port Qasim. The company has agreed to submit a comprehensive feasibility study for the proposed Integrated Maritime Industrial Complex, marking a potential boost for industrial cooperation between the two countries.
The development was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs. Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the project in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and industrial output.
The Sea to Steel initiative aims to establish a fully integrated industrial zone centered around steel production and maritime logistics. By leveraging Port Qasim’s strategic location, the project is expected to enhance export capacity, create employment opportunities, and attract foreign direct investment.
According to officials, Shandong Xinxu Group will prepare a detailed feasibility study outlining technical, financial, and operational aspects of the proposed complex. Once submitted, the proposal will undergo thorough evaluation by relevant authorities before any final approvals are granted.
Port Qasim plays a critical role in Pakistan’s trade and industrial supply chain. Expanding its capabilities through large-scale industrial projects could significantly improve value-added manufacturing and reduce reliance on imported steel products.
The involvement of a Chinese energy and industrial group signals continued investor interest in Pakistan’s infrastructure and industrial sectors. Such collaborations are often aligned with broader regional economic connectivity goals and long-term development frameworks.
Government representatives emphasized transparency and due diligence in reviewing the feasibility report. They noted that environmental compliance, economic viability, and local employment generation will be key considerations in assessing the project.
If approved, the Integrated Maritime Industrial Complex could position Port Qasim as a major industrial hub in South Asia. The project has the potential to strengthen Pakistan’s steel manufacturing capacity while boosting maritime-related industries.
As discussions move forward, stakeholders remain focused on ensuring that the Sea to Steel initiative aligns with national economic priorities and sustainable development goals.
