Police Recover Stolen Fabergé Egg After Alleged Thief Swallows Luxury Pendant

New Zealand police have recovered a rare Fabergé-style pendant valued at around US$20,000 after a suspected thief reportedly swallowed the item during a jewellery store heist in Auckland.

Authorities arrested a 32-year-old man last week following the incident, but the high-value pendant could not be retrieved immediately due to the suspect’s alleged attempt to conceal evidence. Police said they were forced to wait nearly a week before the item could be recovered safely.

According to the official statement issued Friday, the pendant is now in police custody. Officers reportedly assigned personnel to supervise the suspect during the six-day wait, a step taken to ensure both evidence recovery and health monitoring.

The stolen item is described as a limited-edition piece inspired by the James Bond film “Octopussy,” which is centered around the theft of a priceless Fabergé egg. The pendant features a green exterior embellished with an 18-carat gold lattice design set with blue sapphires and white diamonds, creating a floral pattern.

Inside, the piece contains a small golden octopus, adding a distinctive reference to the film that inspired its design.

The House of Fabergé, originally established in Russia, rose to global prominence in the late 19th century for creating lavish Easter eggs using gold, enamel, and precious stones for Russian royalty. Over time, the brand’s legacy became synonymous with exclusivity, craftsmanship, and collectible artistry.

While the pendant is not an original Imperial Fabergé egg, its design and materials place it in the category of premium jewellery associated with the brand’s reputation. Such pieces are often sought after by collectors, driving up their value.

Police have not disclosed whether additional charges will be filed, but the investigation remains open. The suspect remains in custody.

The unusual recovery has drawn media attention in New Zealand and internationally due to the method used to conceal the stolen pendant. Authorities have not released further medical or legal details but confirmed the case underscores the lengths some offenders go to avoid being caught.

The item is expected to be returned to the jewellery store pending legal procedures.
