US to Permanently Close Peshawar Consulate Near Afghan Border

The United States has announced plans to permanently shut down its consulate in Peshawar, marking a significant shift in its diplomatic presence in Pakistan. The decision was reported by The Independent and confirmed through official notifications sent by the United States Department of State.

The consulate in Peshawar has long been considered one of the most strategically located American diplomatic missions in the region. Situated close to the Afghanistan border, the facility played a crucial role during and after the United States invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, serving as a major operations and logistics hub for diplomatic and security activities.

Officials said the closure is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at reducing operational costs and reorganizing diplomatic resources. According to reports, shutting down the consulate could save the U.S. government around $7.5 million annually.

The facility currently employs a small team of American diplomats along with dozens of local staff members. As part of the shutdown process, equipment, vehicles, and other resources will be relocated to the U.S. Embassy Islamabad and other remaining U.S. consulates in Karachi and Lahore.

Despite the closure, U.S. officials say consular services and diplomatic operations in Pakistan will continue without disruption. American citizens and other applicants requiring services will be directed to the embassy in Islamabad, located roughly 114 miles from Peshawar.

The Peshawar mission has historically served as a key point of contact for American citizens in northwestern Pakistan and for Afghan nationals seeking assistance or services. Its strategic location also made it an important base for coordination related to cross-border developments in the region.

While the permanent closure marks the end of a long-standing diplomatic presence in the city, the United States maintains a significant diplomatic footprint in Pakistan through its embassy in Islamabad and consulates in Karachi and Lahore.

The move reflects broader changes in U.S. diplomatic priorities in South Asia, particularly after the end of large-scale military operations in Afghanistan and ongoing restructuring within American foreign service operations.
