In a landmark move to bridge the urban-rural transport gap, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the launch of a fleet of advanced electric buses, designed to bring modern, affordable mobility to the province’s most underserved areas.
The buses — air-conditioned, Wi-Fi-equipped, and powered by green technology — are currently being shipped from Yantai, China, and will soon begin operations in Punjab. Each vehicle comes with a fully automated ticketing system, ensuring efficiency and transparency for passengers.
The initial rollout will serve districts that have faced years without reliable public transport, including Mianwali, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Pakpattan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. For many residents, this marks the first time they will have access to such facilities at a nominal fare of just Rs20.
Speaking on social media, Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her government’s commitment to delivering safe, peaceful, and comfortable travel options for all, including individuals with special needs. “This initiative is about more than buses — it’s about dignity, opportunity, and progress,” she stated.
The announcement comes alongside another major national initiative: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s pledge to distribute 100,000 laptops to academically high-achieving students across Pakistan. Both programs reflect a broader vision of infrastructure and human capital development, aimed at preparing the country for a more connected, technologically advanced future.
