Second day of YLC highlights need to achieve mental, emotional well-being of youth

[Karachi, 3rd Sept, 2021] The second day of Young Leaders’ Conference (YLC) on Thursday was all about emotional and mental well-being of the adolescent brains against the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic that has given rise to the psychological problems all over the world due to prolonged lockdown regimes.

The theme of the day was “Developmental Leadership-ALMIYA” as Waqar Ali was one of the keynote speakers of the day. The day started with an energizing session, briefing on the upcoming proceedings, and giving a wrap-up of the proceedings of the day one of the YLC.

The topics discussed during the proceedings included inclusiveness, psychological well-being, emotional intelligence, and mental health of the youth.

The proceedings of the day were conducted with strict adherence to the government-prescribed standard operating procedures against the spread of coronavirus.

The participants of the YLC were informed that Developmental Leadership is all about expanding one’s mind-set. It empowers us to come together and have difficult conversations, regarding subjects that may be considered taboo in our society, with an open mind and a greater will to understand.

With 64 per cent of Pakistan’s population comprising the youth, it is imperative that we address matters of emotional, physical and social well-being with great importance.

From mental health to social hygiene and from sustainable development to climate change, it is our responsibility to grow and take initiative, said the speakers of the day two of YLC.

The goal of the day was to develop a growth mind-set and get a conversation started among the participants. Even though our cultural roots encourage us to be accepting, it is often done only when convenient. With a day specifically about Developmental Leadership, the organizers hoped to equip the youth with tools to be informed about the world around them, empathize with others and encourage them to promote growth within and in the communities around them.

Other important speakers of the day included Nisha Rao and Taha Sabir who spoke on the issue of emotional intelligence.

Different sessions of the day were held on the topics of inclusive communities, self-defence, emergency medical services, sign language, emotional intelligence and its impact on mental health, defining fears instead of goals.

The day also had Asad Ibrahim’s session. He helped the participants understand the meaning of Alif on a spiritual level. He also did a meditation with the participants to make them feel relaxed and calm.

The day ended with Waqar Ali’s activity titled “Your dinner is locked until…”

Ahmed Shehzad had gotten injured during the fielding so Hawks were coming up with double pressure of chasing 237 and having lost their premium cast opener. Sameen Gul striked in his very first over when Umar Amin threw an easy catch to the wicket keeper. Mohammad Imran had not been utilized brilliantly at the lower order so management promoted him at no.3 to go big in a high-scoring competition but allrounder failed to get a good outing and lost his wicket for just 13 off 11 to Ammad Butt who dismissed Bismillah Khan as well after just another delivery in the same over. Coming in at no.4, the young Kashmiri sensation, Kashif Ali, had a day better than Sharjeel Khan even as he rescued his side in their all important game.

Muzaffarabad Tigers won the game against Kotli Lions by 5 wickets with 9 balls remaining while the same is the second victory of Tigers in the tournament as they have beaten Overseas Warriors as well in game 02 of KPL 2021. Placed at no.2 in the table, they have 4 points after having played 3 games in the tournament while Lions are still in search of a victory as the team stands at no.5 with just one point.

Pakistan is heading towards a change, at least it seems so, and media is playing a major role in changing the mindsets of people. Thanks to our celebrity influencers who know how much their voices matter and are raising theirs to make a difference.

One of those celebrities is Zahid Ahmed who recently highlighted the dual standards of our society in an interview and said that “It is strange that we are allowed to slap women on TV but cannot show intimacy”.

Zahid’s statement has stirred a new controversy and people are now discussing this matter on social media. Celebrities have also come forward and defended his statement.

One of the celebrities who agree with Zahid is Osman Khalid Butt. Butt posted an Instagram story and wrote, “Strange Indeed”.

One of the users replied to Osman Khalid Butt’s story and said that this is “Just a pathetic excuse to get physical with female actors”.

The social media user also said, “Not to mention the influence it has on society and especially young children and young teens.”

Butt definitely did not agree with this definition of intimacy and decided to school the user. He commented, “Yeah, so reactions like this are wholly predictable,” he further said, “First off: intimacy is not just sex. Secondly, I’d rather my child see a healthy intimate relationship between fictional spouses than, you know, PHYSICAL ABUSE being normalized.” he added in the end, “The nerve to talk about ‘influence’.”

Osman Khalid Butt is very vocal about issues that require attention. Be it showing support for the “Me Too” movement or raising awareness about rape or abuse against women, Butt is always one of the few to raise is voice for the cause.

Pakistanis love moral policing; whether it is on the streets or on the internet. We consider giving our unsolicited opinions to everyone, irrespective of the fact that no one really needs it. Sadly, it is the female actors that mostly become victim of trolling. Just scroll through any female artists’ picture and you will be amazed to see how much filth they get to see on their accounts on daily basis. The latest actor to face bashing online is Faryal Mehmood.
