‘Contemporary Continuum’ Show Explores Link Between Tradition and Modern Storytelling

Lahore’s Ocean Art Galleries is currently presenting Contemporary Continuum, a captivating collateral exhibition to the NCA Triennale-2025, celebrating the evolving dialogue between tradition and modern expression in Pakistan’s contemporary art scene.

Bringing together eight accomplished artists, the exhibition explores the intersection of heritage and innovation — revealing how deeply rooted cultural practices continue to shape today’s artistic narratives. The show thoughtfully examines the ways artists reinterpret identity, spirituality, and society through both classical techniques and new, experimental media.

Curated by Tanya Sani, Contemporary Continuum highlights the diversity of voices driving Pakistan’s visual culture forward. Each artist contributes a distinct visual language, from introspective symbolism to socio-political commentary, creating a rich and layered experience for viewers.

A bridge between past and present

The exhibition reflects a dynamic continuum — where traditional aesthetics meet modern storytelling. Azmat Humayun and Qaiser Khan evoke a sense of healing and transcendence through works inspired by the natural world and Sufi mysticism. Their art offers meditative reflections on connection, light, and the cyclical nature of life.

In contrast, Maira Hashmi, Sana Mehmood, and Lubna Jehangir present powerful critiques of societal structures. Through diverse mediums, they address themes of feminine agency, loss, and the consequences of destruction — exploring how women navigate and reclaim space in a changing society.

Meanwhile, Huma Maqbool investigates the illusions of perception and self-awareness, creating visual experiences that blur the line between the seen and the felt. Nabiha Gilani’s work delves into neurodivergence, calmness, and healing — transforming personal memories and trauma into an art form of acceptance and self-liberation.

Speaking about her art, Gilani explained that her creative process stems from “childhood memories, calmness, and leaving trauma behind.” Her work emphasizes the importance of mental health and the freedom that comes from embracing one’s authentic self.

Reimagining nature and identity

Another key contributor, Zainab Mehmood, challenges human-centered narratives by focusing on animals as central subjects. Her striking portraits celebrate the “life essence” of creatures often overlooked, encouraging viewers to rethink humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

By weaving such varied artistic threads together, Contemporary Continuum succeeds in capturing the pulse of Pakistan’s evolving art movement — one that honors tradition while pushing toward bold, contemporary storytelling.

The exhibition features the works of Azmat Humayun, Huma Maqbool, Lubna Jehangir, Maira Hashmi, Nabiha Gilani, Qaiser Khan, Sana Mehmood, and Zainab Mehmood. It is open to the public at Ocean Art Galleries, Lahore, and will continue until November 6.
